Bischof Gottfried (1282/83–1285)

Gottfried originally came from Westphalia, presumably from Osnabrueck. He served at the chamber of King Rudolf I. of Habsburg as a notary and - due to his recommendation - was unanimously elected by the chapter of the cathedral of Passau

2/10/1283

He became bishop and on

3/7/1283

was ordained as a bishop in Salzburg.

Joined by the bishop of Regensburg, Heinrich von Rotteneck, he mediated the peace between Duke Albert of Austria and his ally, the archbishop of Salzburg, on the one side and Duke Heinrich XIII. of Bavaria on the opposite side concerning disputes about several estates in the land above the Inn.

March1284

Gottfried arranged a synod in St. Pölten, which passed important decisions in support of the clergy. The dossiers of the synod give a detailed insight of the main problems of churchly live during that time. Furthermore, Gottfried regulated the financial circumstances of his bishopric.

4/16/1285

Bischof Gottfried died in Nuernberg after two years in office. Gottfried was the first of the medieval bishops of Passau whose mortal remains are preserved because they were transported to the new cathedral.

Valuation: Little is known about Gottfied`s short time of office. Rudolf von Habsburg probably tried to place him as a good ally in the politically and strategically important bishopric.
