Ulrich II

Bishop of Passau 1215-1221

We don` t know much about Ulrich` s origin. At the time of his election he was capitular of Passau, his degree was deacan.

June 1215

In Eferding, Ulrich was elected as bishop, against the resistance of the people and a part of the canons.

July 1215

Ulrich was attendant at the coronation of Friedrich II as King of Rome.

Sept. 1216

The quarrel about his election was arranged at a congregation of sovereigns. Ulrich was ordained as priest and bishop by archbishop Eberhard II of Salzburg. He joins the forth Lateran council in Rome. Probably he was accompanied by Albert Behaim.

Jan. 1217

Trough his and the Duke and Palsegrave Ludwig` s petition, Ulrich acquired the county in the "Ilzgau" of Friedrich II.

July/August 1218

Ulrich II got the confirmation of the assignment of Convent Niedernburg.

1219

He begins with the construction of a castle at the top of the "Georgsberg" ("George`s Mountain"). It is called "Veste Oberhaus".

Nov. 1220

Ulrich was present at the coronation of Friedrich II as Emperor through Pope Honorius III.

April 1221

Together with Duke Ludwig of Bayern, Ulrich was sent to Damiette / Egypt by Emperor Friedrich II to provide support for the crusaders.

Oct. 1221

While returning from Damiette Ulrich II died.

At his vote the quarrels about elections in the capital between Bavarians and Austrians began. These conflicts became more and more frequent in the following time.

The disposition of the Ilzgau as feud through Emperor Friedrich II in 1217 was an outstanding occasion. Since this time the Bishop of Passau was the immediate ruler.

The "Land der Abtei" ("Land of the Abbey") was the core of the princedom.
